A readable legal assistant resume for Canada
A strong legal assistant resume explains how you help a legal team keep its work organized. Law clerks can use these layout principles too, while describing their own responsibilities and credentials accurately. Canadian employers may emphasize different combinations of administrative support, document preparation, billing, scheduling, and client communication. Read the posting closely, then show the experience you actually have. LegalCV formats an existing resume into a clear PDF, free and without an account. It is a formatting tool, not a substitute for tailoring your application or checking that the employer accepts the file format.
Show the work behind the role
List each employer, position, location, and employment dates. Describe the tasks that mattered in your day-to-day work, such as maintaining files, preparing correspondence, coordinating calendars, processing accounts, or supporting document production. Explain the practice setting when it helps the reader understand the work. If you supported multiple lawyers or a particular team, describe that accurately without inflating responsibility. Replace vague statements about being organized with examples of what you organized. Keep the focus on the requirements of the position you are applying for.
Choose useful skills and training
Include relevant education and training with the institution, qualification, and dates. List software and office systems you can use confidently, especially those requested in the posting. Distinguish familiarity from substantial experience. Languages, transcription, document formatting, scheduling, and billing experience can be useful when they relate to the job, but avoid an indiscriminate list of every tool you have tried. For a career change, connect previous administrative work to the new role without claiming legal experience you do not have. Keep unrelated training brief.
Be careful with client and file details
Your examples should demonstrate reliability without exposing confidential information. Describe categories of work rather than copying client names, file numbers, correspondence, or case details into the resume. Review the original document for information that should not be uploaded. You can explain that you handled sensitive records or supported deadline tracking without reproducing those records. Do not add a photograph, unnecessary identity information, or personal details simply to fill space. Use contact information that is professional, current, and appropriate for an employer to use.
Make the document easy to scan
Use straightforward headings such as Work Experience, Education, and Skills. Keep dates and spacing consistent and place newer entries before older ones within each section. Give the most relevant work enough room to explain it, while keeping unrelated roles concise. One or two readable pages is a useful target, subject to the employer’s instructions. Review the exported file for crowded lines, stranded headings, and awkward page breaks. If the posting requests a Word document or an online form, follow that request instead of submitting only a PDF.
Review the formatted result before applying
LegalCV accepts PDF or DOCX files up to 10 MB. Choose Classic, Modern, or Minimal, then check every line of the preview and download. The education-first layout draws on a published student sample and is not a universal legal assistant requirement. If you prefer experience first, adjust your own document separately. The tool does not invent accomplishments, guarantee ATS compatibility, or promise a hiring result. LegalCV is independent of law firms. Read the Privacy Notice first.
